Services of General Madden
£14
(+ postage of £2)
George Allan Madden was born in London on the 3rd of January 1771. This is the story of his unusual military career. His active service covered twenty-four years and included being shipwrecked, resigning the service following a court martial, fighting a duel, being reinstated to the army, and then finally being asked to relinquish his command due to a squabble over seniority. The story as told in this narrative depicts Madden as an officer who has been unfairly treated and missed all his opportunities for glory. The same story as told by others is slightly different. The story is however, a unique insight into the life of a British cavalry officer. His services with the Portuguese cavalry are highly illuminating as to the British view of both the Portuguese and the Spanish cavalry. This work was originally printed in 1820 as part of Madden's entry in the Royal Military Calendar, a biography of serving officers. His 70 page entry is the second largest, only Wellington's being longer.

Strictures on Napier's History
£40
(+ postage of £4)
Whilst most people interested in the Peninsular War have read William Napier's 'History of the Peninsular War', many will not realise the controversy it caused when it was originally published between 1828 and 1840. General William Carr Beresford came in for particular criticism and an anonymous champion appeared in print to defend him. The 'Strictures on Napier's History' appeared in 1831 and started a pamphlet war which lasted until 1840 and amounted to over 750 pages of debate. This argument also triggered a parallel argument between Beresford and Charles Edward Long who rose to the defence of his uncle when he was criticised in the subsequent anonymous pamphlet. Later editions of Napier's 'History' make no reference to these arguments although some changes were made. It is very useful when reading Napier to also have access to the information contained in 'Strictures' and the following pamphlets, as it tends to alter your view of what you are reading. The pamphlets, apart from making fascinating reading themselves, contain a huge wealth of detail which was never printed elsewhere, and is invaluable to serious historians. The battle of Albuera, was one of the main points of controversy and many pieces of information are held within the pages of the later pamphlets. They are, unfortunately, almost impossible to get hold of. I have carefully reprinted a small number to make them available once again. Included is Napier's reply to the Strictures which was published in 1832. Printed and bound by hand. A maximum of 100 copies will be made. 160 pages in length

Further Strictures on Napier's History
£45
(+ postage of £5)
Further Strictures is the second of two anonymous pamphlets which were published in response to Lieutenant-Colonel Napier's "History of the War in the Peninsula". Napier's third volume was published in 1831 and covered Beresford's campaign in southern Spain (including the battle of Albuera). Napier once again, strongly criticised Beresford, and a second anonymous pamphlet, appeared. It deals extensively with the events leading up to, and including the battle of Albuera. It contains a wealth of detail on this highly controversial battle, one of only three major battles at which Wellington was not present. Like the other two, Corunna and Barossa, it was a victory, but a costly one. Beresford's performance was not rated highly and the British casualties were horrendous. Further Strictures also included, as an appendix, a copy of Sir Benjamin D'Urban's privately printed report on Beresford's operations in 1811. Along with these original texts, Napier's response to the Further Strictures is included, "A Justification of his Third Volume" which was published in 1832 Printed and bound by hand. No more than 100 copies will be made. 285 pages in length.

Refutation of Napier’s Justification of his third
£45
(+ postage of £5)
Beresford's 'Refutation of Napier's Justification of his third volume' was the third extensive criticism of Lieutenant-Colonel Napier's "History of the War in the Peninsula" which aimed to defend the reputation and actions of Beresford. The first, 'Strictures,' was published anonymously following the publication of Napier's second volume in 1829. The second, 'Further Strictures,' was also published anonymously in 1832 in response to further criticisms in Napier's third volume with regard Beresford's campaign in southern Spain (including the battle of Albuera). The subsequent, third attack on Napier's History came from Beresford himself, although it is strongly believed that he also had a hand in the two earlier anonymous pamphlets. "A Refutation of Napier's Justification of his third volume" was originally published in 1834. The bulk of its 250 pages is related to the campaign in Southern Spain in 1811 in which Beresford held an independent command. His operations, in command of a combined British, Portuguese and Spanish army, against Marshal Soult had been subjected to many criticisms, particularly his actions at the battle of Albuera in May 1811. Detailed discussions of this battle form an important part of this pamphlet. Many fascinating details of this campaign, which cannot be found elsewhere, are contained in this 'Refutation,' and the previous publications. Napier's reply to Beresford's Refutation is also included. Both of these documents are very rare and you are unlikely to find them bound together anywhere else. Printed and bound by hand. No more than 100 copies will be made. 280 pages in length.
